Are The Yaeyama Islands.
The
Yaeyama Island are located 500km south west of Okinawa main island,
closer to Taiwan than Okinawa and located over 1200 miles south
from Tokyo. Yaeyama Islands are the ultimate tropical hideaway.
Each
of the fascinating Yaeyama Islands are unique in character, flora
and wildlife from each other. If
you want to relax on a quiet unspoilt sandy beach, find hidden coves,
explore rain forests and jungles, Yaeyama has it all. Offshore the
eco nature of the region is just as spectacular and you can experience
some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world.
The
surrounding ocean around Yaeyama is home to a huge colourful array
of coral species, which have a wider variety of coral living together
than even the Great Barrier Reef, including one of the largest colonies
of blue coral in the world. The coral is home to a massive variety
of tropical fish including the playful Clown fish, Sea turtles,
Manta rays, box turtles & further out to sea schools of hammerheads
shark.
On
land enjoy clear star filled skies, dancing Fire flies and virgin
rain forests. The islands untouched rain forests and unique wildlife
is home to many rare and endangered species including the Iriomote
Wildcat, Crested serpent Eagle, Atlas moths, Rice paper butterflies,
land crabs, Coconut crabs and Yaeyama flying fox. It is for this
reason that a growing interest from Eco-tourists and nature lovers
are choosing to explore the Galapagos of Asia.
Ishigaki
Island
The
largest and most populated of the Yaeyama Islands islands, Ishigaki
offers great natural scenery of sugar cane plantations and tropical
forests. Ishigaki City is the Yaeyama's only urban centre and is
the site of the region's major airport and boat terminal, as well
as lots of shops, restaurants and bars. Ishigaki offers sandy beaches
and great snorkelling and diving in the surrounding coral reefs
including seeing the island's famed Manta rays which congregate
in large numbers around Manta Scramble near Kabira Bay.
Taketomi
Island
This
beautiful island is surrounded by coral reef and the roads covered by white sand,
making you feel like you are in a huge idilic garden. Taketomi many unique sights
include the magical 'Star Sand Beach', where as the name implies has star sand,
which is actually formed from skeletons of tiny marine creatures. Another beautiful
location is Kondoi beach, which has unspoilt white sand in contrast to the multi
shades of blue ocean.
Iriomote
Island
This
island is known as the Galapagos of the East and 90% of the island is covered
by tropical Jungle with Okinawa's largest mangrove groves extend in the mouth
of the islands river. Iriomote is home to extremely rare and endangered wildlife,
including the Iriomote wildcat, crowned Eagle, Round back tortoise and Atlas moth
etc. This island is a nature lovers dream.
Kohama
Island
This
island is filled with tropical plants, such as the Pandanus and
Chinese Banyan trees. The mountain in the centre of the island provides
great views over the coral reefs and neighbouring Islands. An ideal
island to enjoy nature, birds and fauna, or relax on the beach and
snorkel or dive in the spectacular coral reefs.
Funauki
Island
The
small island of Funauki is home to a communities of about 50 people,
who fish in the crystal waters and cultivate the rare black pearl.
Take a short walk through a tropical forest and visit Ida beach
which is the most picturesque secluded white sandy beach imaginable.
